How Naturopathic Medicine Can Support Your Health
Naturopathic medicine takes a whole-person approach to health. We look at your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and the connections between different systems in the body to develop personalized care that meets you where you are.
-
Support for ongoing digestive concerns, including IBS, SIBO, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, and other unexplained digestive symptoms.
-
Personalized support for hormone and reproductive health concerns, including endometriosis, PCOS, now PMOS, fertility challenges, fibroids, and heavy or irregular periods.
-
Care for concerns such as chronic fatigue, burnout, caregiver fatigue, low energy, and thyroid-related health concerns, with a focus on understanding the factors that may be affecting your energy and wellbeing.
-
Support for anxiety, depression, sleep concerns, sleep apnea, chronic stress, and complex experiences such as CPTSD. Our approach considers the relationship between your nervous system, lifestyle, sleep, and overall health.
-
Individualized care for people navigating inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropathies, diabetes, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and other chronic health concerns.
-
Naturopathic care can also support your health before problems arise. Whether you're preparing for pregnancy, navigating parenthood, moving through a career or lifestyle change, or looking to maintain your health and vitality as you age, we can help you build sustainable habits for long-term wellbeing.
A different kind of healing space.
Trauma-informed care
We recognize that pain doesn't always start in the body. Your history, your experiences, and the weight of the systems that aren’t built for you to thrive, all live in your nervous system. We take the time to understand that before anything else.
Relationship before treatment
We're not here to put a bandaid on your symptoms and send you on your way. Every session is built on genuine connection with your practitioner and your body. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of what your body has been trying to tell you.
Indigenous-led and decolonized care
Founded by Dr. Sadie Laronde, an Anishinaabe chiropractor, The Effect is rooted in Indigenous wisdom and a holistic understanding of health: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
All Bodies Welcome
Pregnant women and folks, postpartum families, children, elders, and everyone in between. Whatever you're carrying and wherever you're starting from, you belong.
A Space That Feels Like Care
For some people, visiting a clinic can feel like another hurdle.
Our naturopathic medicine practice in Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood is warm, welcoming, and intentionally unhurried. And because we’re a collective, you have access to practitioners across different modalities, including chiropractic care, massage therapy, reflexology, and acupuncture, who can work alongside one another to support your health from different perspectives.
Naturopathic care that feels personal, connected, and human.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
A naturopathic doctor (ND) is a regulated healthcare professional who takes a whole-person approach to health. Rather than looking at symptoms or body systems in isolation, naturopathic medicine considers the connections between your physical health, nutrition, nervous system, emotional wellbeing, lifestyle, environment, and community.
Dr. Laura Batson works with people experiencing chronic and complex health concerns, with a particular focus on chronic inflammatory conditions, gut health, hormone imbalances, burnout, and mental health. Depending on your needs, care may include nutrition and food-as-medicine, lifestyle medicine, botanical medicine, supplements, acupuncture, and mind-body approaches.
-
Yes. Naturopathic doctors are regulated healthcare professionals in Ontario by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. The College sets standards for education, registration, and professional practice.
The title Naturopathic Doctor (ND) is protected in Ontario. This means that someone using the title in practice must be registered with the College and meet its requirements.
-
Absolutely. Naturopathic medicine can complement your existing medical care rather than replace it.
Dr. Laura takes your current diagnoses, medications, treatments, and other healthcare providers into consideration when developing your care plan. When appropriate, naturopathic care can become one part of a broader healthcare team.
The goal is to support your health while respecting the care you are already receiving.
-
Dr. Laura combines Western medical science with naturopathic, traditional, and holistic approaches to healing. She looks beyond individual symptoms to explore the patterns and contributing factors that may be affecting your health.
Her approach is also trauma-informed, decolonial, and anti-oppressive, recognizing that health is influenced not only by biology, but also by our relationships, environments, communities, and lived experiences.
Her goal is not simply to ask, “How do we make this symptom go away?” but to consider what your whole system may need to move toward greater health, resilience, and coherence.
-
Trauma-informed care recognizes that our experiences, relationships, environments, and sense of safety can all influence health and wellbeing.
Rather than making assumptions about your story, Dr. Laura creates space for you to participate in your care and make choices that feel appropriate for you. Her approach is grounded in respect, collaboration, autonomy, and meeting you where you are.
-
Dr. Laura runs a general naturopathic practice with a particular focus on chronic inflammatory conditions, gut and digestive health, hormone imbalances, burnout, and mental health.
She also works with people navigating chronic or complex health concerns and those looking to build greater resilience and wellbeing over time.
If you're unsure whether naturopathic medicine is appropriate for what you're experiencing, you can book a 15-minute discovery call to talk through your needs.
-
Yes. Digestive health is one of Dr. Laura's areas of focus. Naturopathic care may support people experiencing ongoing concerns such as bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, IBS, food sensitivities, or other digestive symptoms.
Care begins with understanding your individual history and looking at the broader factors that may be influencing your digestive health. Your treatment plan is then tailored to your needs and goals.
-
Yes. Hormone health is another area Dr. Laura works with. Naturopathic care may support concerns related to hormone imbalances, menstrual health, reproductive health, and other hormone-related symptoms.
Depending on your individual needs, care may include nutrition, lifestyle approaches, supplements, botanical medicine, acupuncture, and other appropriate therapies.
-
Dr. Laura has a particular interest in chronic and complex health concerns. These can involve multiple symptoms or body systems and may require looking at health from several different perspectives.
Rather than focusing only on one symptom, she works with you to explore patterns and contributing factors while considering your physical health, nutrition, nervous system, emotional wellbeing, lifestyle, environment, and existing medical care.
-
Your initial naturopathic appointment is 75 minutes, giving you time to talk through your health concerns, health history, goals, and what you're hoping to change.
Dr. Laura takes a broad look at your health rather than focusing on a single symptom. Together, you'll identify priorities and determine what further assessment or treatment may be helpful.
Your initial appointment is $295.
-
Follow-up appointments typically range from 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your needs and health goals.
Rather than assigning everyone the same appointment length, you and Dr. Laura will decide together what type of follow-up makes sense for your care. This allows your appointments to evolve as your health and priorities change.
-
Yes. Virtual naturopathic appointments are available at the same price as in-person appointments.
Virtual care can be a convenient option if you live outside Ottawa, have mobility or scheduling considerations, or simply prefer to meet from home.
-
Yes. Children receive naturopathic care. Because the appropriate approach can vary depending on a child's age, health concerns, and circumstances, we recommend starting with a 15-minute discovery call to determine whether this practice is a good fit.

The Effect is a collective of practitioners, not just a naturopathic clinic. Alongside naturopathic medicine, our Glebe space brings together practitioners offering chiropractic care, massage therapy, reflexology, and acupuncture.
When appropriate, these different perspectives can complement one another and provide a more connected approach to your health. Having different practitioners under one roof can also make it easier to build a care team around your individual needs.
